An introduction to academic post-graduate writing and beyond. This day workshop will look at exploring the building blocks of good writing and introduce you to a variety of strategies for developing strong academic writing skills. Ideal for those contemplating writing at this level.

The Tutor:

Anne Wilson is a former freelance journalist (Cosmopolitan, The Guardian, The New York Times). She has written an academic book on the identity of British mixed race children, two crime novels and has won numerous awards for drama and documentary scripts. Anne is currently researching the role of feedback in helping students improve their writing with the Occupational Therapy Department of Brunel University.

About this course

- Identify key features that differentiate undergradutate from postgraduate writing
- Identify areas for your own writing development towards the postgraduate level and beyond.

None, but please do bring a pen and paper (laptop, tablet, etc.) to take down any notes you may want to during the workshop session.

Course programme

- introduce the building blocks of good writing: critical analysis and critical reading skills
- introduce a variety of strategies for developing strong academic writing skills
- introduce a framework for developing a writing plan.

The workshop will include presentation of material, exercises to 'test' and develop basic understanding of the skills discussed, and possible reading/critiquing in class session, of a piece of writing to better understand skills and strategies covered. Tutor presentation will be interwoven with discussion, practical activities and some reflection time.
