Introduction to Advanced Maths

General Information
This course takes some of the topics from GCSE Maths further. It is a level 3 course, approximately equivalent to one module of an AS level. The course provides support for students not taking AS Maths but taking advanced courses in subjects that involve some Maths.

Course Content
The topics in the course extend the work of GCSE, and include some of the work in the Higher Tier GCSE course. They build on these to cover topics which will be useful in studying other subject at AS level and topics at the start of the AS Maths syllabus. There are five areas
  • Manipulating algebra including linear and quadratic equations.
  • Drawing graphs plotting and sketching linear and quadratic graphs. Finding the minimum or maximum point of a quadratic graph.
  • Using trigonometry including the sine rule and cosine rule for non right-angled triangles.
  • Using surds and indices using negative powers and fractional powers, simplifying expressions with square roots.
  • Differentiation finding the gradient of a curved graph algebraically. Using this to maximise and minimise expressions.
How it is Taught
Students have two lessons per week, each one hour long. The teacher introduces topics and helps students to gain the skills needed to complete the homework exercises, which are used to assess the course. Some lessons involve the use of graph plotting software, which students can access on the college network.

Examination Details
The course is assessed by exercises completed throughout the year, which must show that you have understood and can use each technique. If you show this, then you obtain a pass grade. There is no examination.

Useful/Common Subject Combinations
The course provides support for students not taking AS Maths but taking advanced courses in subjects that involve some Maths. These include
  • Sciences: Science, Physics, Chemistry and Biology
  • Business and Leisure: Business Studies and Economics.

    Computing and ICT
  • Humanities: Psychology, Sociology, Health and Social Care

It is also suitable for students who want to take their Maths further than GCSE level but do not feel confident to take AS Maths. Students who show a good understanding of the Introduction to Advanced Maths can progress to AS level Maths the following year.
