The course is primarily concerned with films and filmmakers in Japan and China, but will also touch on cinema in Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

About this course
• Describe and evaluate the history and development of Japanese cinema since 1945
• Describe and evaluate the 'fifth generation' filmmakers and films in Chinese cinema of the 1980s/1990s and after
• Evaluate a range of films, filmmakers and film styles in the cinema of Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand
• Evaluate east Asian cinema within a critical framework.
You will require a pen and paper (or laptop/device) but the tutor will provide all other materials.
Screenings of extracts from films, talks by the tutor, reading materials, small and large group discussions.
