A guided introduction to a variety of methods and media to inspire an innovative and exploratory approach to drawing the figure. An opportunity to begin to identify the value of both analytical and experimental approaches and the relationship between them in the drawing process. This course is ideal as a companion to more formal drawing courses and is suitable for beginners as well as those with experience in drawing who wish to refresh their practice or stimulate new ways of working.

About this course

The course fee includes most materials. Students are welcome to bring additional drawing materials and specialist papers if they wish. You may wish to buy a sketch book and drawing materials to practice drawing tasks outside of the class..

Practical drawing tasks with a life model. The class will include ‘warm-up’ drawing exercises, including techniques to focus the mind and enhance concentration. There will be opportunities to draw longer poses, during which one-to-one guidance is offered. There will be group discussion and sharing of individual drawing experiences for those who would like it.

Course programme

During the course we will explore ways to stimulate a fresh and innovative response to drawing the figure. There will be a series of guided exercises looking at: a sensitive use of line, expressive mark-making, tone, composition, mixed media, the figure in movement, imaginative uses of colour and the role of imagination. You will be introduced to a range of drawing media and techniques to inspire new directions or support confidence in starting figure drawing. We will also explore the role of spontaneity, perception and empathy in creating drawings that express clarity, aliveness and a sense of meaning and a number of artist’s work, as references to the specific exercises taught and for inspiration. You will be introduced to ways of evaluating your work and begin to make informed decisions regarding its development.
