About this module

All health professionals have a requirement to promote health. This module allows nurses and other health professionals to consider what health and health improvement are and examine differing approaches to improving health, from taking an individual perspective to a community development approach.

Learning outcomes
  • The recent historical background of the health promotion movement and its relevance to current debates in a UK context will be examined.
  • Definitions and meanings of Health, Health Promotion and Health Improvement within the current policy context will be discussed.
  • Socio-medico determinants of health will be examined.
  • The relevance of the World Health Organisation and its impact on the development of health promotion will be introduced.
  • Debate and discussion about models of health promotion.
  • Approaches to health promotion in terms of the individual, the family and the community will be discussed.
  • Barriers to promoting health with the individual, the family and the community will be examined.
  • Discussion on approaches to evaluating health promotion programmes will occur.
