Introduction to Learning Disabilities

Learning disability describes a group of people with significant developmental delay, arrested or incomplete achievement. The causes of learning disability are explored looking at chromosome abnormalities, gene abnormalities, environmental causes, infections, perinatal and postnatal causes. Downs syndrome, Edwards’s syndrome, Cri du chat syndrome and pradi-willi are all discussed, as are the behavioural difficulties and what to do about undesired behaviours. Communication is included investigating useful tools for communication.
