Course overview
A new and exciting cross Stockport initiative for September 2009 this course has been designed with input from employers, schools and colleges.
This Diploma has been designed to support progression to further study, training or employment.
It is a full time course that includes Functional skills such as English, ICT and Mathematics as well as covering specific Society, Health and Development units.
Your course will encourage you to use personal, learning and thinking skills which will be valuable for either further study or employment.
Throughout the course you will have an opportunity to apply the knowledge you have acquired in a practical and realistic way by attending work placement experience in the community, participating in class discussions and sharing your own experience.
This programme offers you a wide background knowledge of work in a variety of care settings and also prepares you for progression onto a Level 3 course.
There are 9 units which all need to be completed to fully achieve the Higher Diploma. Subjects covered will include:
Working together and communicating
Patient-centred health
Antisocial and offending behaviour
Growth, development and healthy living
Supporting children and young people

This is a Level 2 course. It is likely to be suitable for students with 4 GCSEs at grade D. You will need a good knowledge and understanding in your basic skills.
How you will learn
Throughout the course you will develop your personal learning and thinking skills by using a themed case study to do some thought provoking activities.
In class you will take part in: group discussions, role play, presentations, listening to visiting speakers and work experience.
You will be taught by teachers who are specialist in their field and have a real passion for their subject areas.
How you will be assessed
You will produce coursework assignments throughout the course with one examined assignment.
Other complementary subjects
You will also improve your English, Maths, and ICT skills (functional skills) to level 2 and enjoy a work placement each year.

The Diploma has been designed to help you explore the many different sectors and help will be available to ensure you make informed choices about the right employment, vocational training or Level 3 options.

Ive always thought about working with children, either in teaching or childcare. I decided to do the Diploma in Society, Health and Development - its the obvious choice for me.
But I also like the fact that the Diploma is hands on. Ill get to know what Im good at and what skills Ill need to work in if I want to succeed in the future.
