Is the course for me?
This full time course aims to provide you with the knowledge and skills to enable you to progress onto a level three course in health and social care and to develop a range of employability skills essential for working at level two. One day a week will be spent in a work placement area. This will give you the opportunity to practice the skills that you are learning in college and to share your experiences in placement with your fellow students in college. A criminal records check is required and the paperwork for this must be completed at the beginning of the course prior to the work placement being undertaken. A uniform must be worn, in college and in placement, that represents this vocational area - the uniform is an additional cost.
What will I learn?
You will study a variety of interesting units on the course, including Anatomy and Physiology, Individual Needs, Communications and Rights, Creative and Therapeutic Activities and a Vocational Practice unit linked to your placement area. The lessons are delivered in a variety of ways in order to motivate and keep you interested. Lessons include visits by guest speakers, practical activities, independent study and learning and teaching sessions.
How will I be assessed?
You will be required to complete various written and practical assignments for each unit studied. You must also produce a portfolio of evidence gathered during your work placement and you will be given help with this.
What can I do after the course?
If you achieve a good final grade for the course - i.e. a Merit or Distinction Grade, you will be able to progress to a Level Three course in Health and Social Care - e.g. BTEC National Diploma in Health and Social Care or The Advanced Diploma in Society, Health and Development. You could also go on to work as a care worker in a Level Two post in a Health and Social Care setting.
