This course provides an introduction to the wide range of art works within the collection at Tate Modern in Southwark. The course will explore specific works by modern and contemporary artists in relation to wider cultural and social contexts. The aim is to develop your confidence when looking at and discussing art in London’s galleries.We will explore Tate’s themed displays in relation to key 20th century art movements, and look at the key themes developed by the 21st century’s leading practitioners. This course includes an assessment of more recent types of art common to the contemporary art scene: video and installation.

About this course
• Be able to describe at least two key themes and developments in British art
• Have better awareness of advances and developments in British art in relation to wider cultural and social context.
• Discuss and analyse works of art in Tate Britain with more confidence
• Recognise at least 3 key artists and their work from the Tate collection.
Gallery entry is free. You might wish to bring a notebook and buy some of the books on the reading list. Please note we are unable to guarantee seats on gallery visits so you may have to stand and to walk between exhibits. You might prefer to invest in a lightweight portable seat. The session includes a break in the Tate gallery café - coffee/ tea is not included in the course fee.
