Course Overview:
Twentieth century Philosophy was marked by a number of far-reaching challenges to its own history. This course starts by considering the contribution made by Jacques Derrida — the enfant terrible of 1960’s French thought. We’ll see how his unique role begins in Heidegger’s Destruktion of the subject and trace the ways in which his own position, Deconstruction, developed into a maddening engagement with its own past.

Suggested readings:
As ever, all readings will be provided.
There is a huge number of secondary texts dealing with Derrida’s thought — a testament to his influence. Not many of them are of interest to us. What follows is a brief list, but be careful, many commentators cannot resist the temptation to slip into a (usually poor) impersonation of Derrida’s own ‘style’. I’ve tried to steer clear of (some of) the worst offenders.
