This hands-on course will introduce you to the techniques of creative metalworking and fabrication. Working on a series of small-scale projects we will cover the use of basic tools, and processes such as cutting, bending, welding and joining metals. Suitable for both beginners and those with some experience, bring along your ideas and pieces of scrap metal to try out the processes and make a small-scale object to take away.

About this course

- competently use different techniques such as cutting, bending, forming, drilling, bolting and riveting
- produce work using a welding or soldering process
- work safely, following the correct health and safety procedures
- design and construct a metal-based object or sculpture.

General tools and equipment will be supplied. Most of the cost of the materials for sampling and experimentation will be covered by the course fee. If you want to make a larger item, you will have to purchase or supply the metal. A sketchbook and drawing materials would be useful. You might want to incorporate found ferrous metal objects into your work.
Stout shoes must be worn at all times in the Sculpture studio.

Through demonstrations, practical work, technical notes, and instruction as a member of a group and individually, as appropriate to the session.

- A brief look at the work of artists and designers who use fabricated metals in their work
- Practical demonstrations of a selection of processes
- How the processes can be used to create a piece of work appropriate to your interests
- Health and safety issues and an induction into the correct use of equipment
- Preparation of a design, and construction of a maquette to be used as a pattern for the final piece
- Review and discussion of the work and processes used.

The City Lit sculpture department offers a programme of courses that will allow you to progress from beginner to advanced, as well as mastering a range of techniques. You may wish to enrol on the year-long City Lit Sculpture Course will help you to build an individual sculpture practice, or you could try another specific specialist course such as Carving in wood or stone or prop making to further your skills. Ask your tutor for advice or browse the City Lit website or prospectus for inspiration.
