Course programme

Armed with your Private Pilot's Licence you are now ready to start your professional training for your ATPL (Airline Transport Pilot Licence). Welcome to ground training!

Whichever form of Modular Ground Training you prefer, one thing is common - namely the need to take and pass the JAA ATPL(A) Theoretical Knowledge examinations.

You will need to sit a total of 14 examination papers. We divide the subjects into two phases - each phase being undertaken on completion of the appropriate phase of ground training.

Phase One Subjects

  • Principles of Flight
  • Airframe Systems
  • Meteorology
  • Instrumentation
  • Human Performance & Limitations
  • VFR Communications
  • IFR Communications

Phase Two Subjects

  • General Navigation
  • Operational Procedures
  • Flight Planning
  • Radio Navigation
  • Aircraft Performance
  • Air Law
  • Mass & Balance

You may complete your Ground Ttraining in one of two ways: FULL-TIME CLASSROOM BASED (CBR) TRAINING OR DISTANCE LEARNING (DL) . There are advantages and disadvantages of both approaches. Whichever route suits you best, there is no getting away from the plain fact that you have to pass these exams and pass them well. Airlines often require you to have achieved an average pass mark of at least 85% with no more than 2 attempts at any examination - despite the official pass mark for each exam being 75%.

Whether you choose to attend one of our 28 week full-time training courses, which are timetabled throughout the year, or study through our distance learning course, it is a fact that our students have consistently achieved excellent results in the JAA ATPL ground examinations.

Distance Learning

If you approach your ATPL(A) Ground Training this way then you will have to complete 2 key sections:

1. Complete our Home Study Course

2. Complete 2 x two week Skills Revision Classes with us at Oxford Airport

Our Home Study course allows you to commence training at any time once you have your PPL(A) and learn at your own individual pace. Study time is flexible, subject to the course being completed within 18 months. Additionally, once you have sat your first JAA examination, you must pass all 14 written exams, also within 18 months.

If you are a distance learning student, it is a JAA requirement that you complete at least 10% of your training in a classroom environment. This we achieve through our 1 week Skills Revision Classes which are run on a regular basis throughout the year. You have to complete a total of 4 weeks of Skills Revision Classes through our Distance Learning course.

We only require you to pay for your home study course when you enrol and then you simply pay for your Skills Revision Classes as you take them. You will never pay for any one specific Skills Revision Class more than once - but you may repeat your attendance at that specific class on a future date at no extra charge.
