About this course

- Recognise different forms of jazz composition, common harmonic progressions, and chord types
- Write down simple jazz rhythms and melodies
- Understand how scales and chords relate to one another
- Improvise/compose with confidence.

Lionel Grigson Practical Jazz (Stainer and Bell) recommended. Mark Levine Jazz Theory Book (Chuck Sher) optional. You will need your instrument for most sessions.

Course programme

- Understanding the different forms of jazz sequences
- Developing rhythmic and melodic awareness
- Studying bass line movement and simple voice-leading
- Choosing scale options (modes of major scale, pentatonics and harmonic minor)
- ‘Jam’ sessions to put the above in context.

You will learn through group listening, discussion and singing of relevant parts, class exercises (dictation and chord recognition), theory and performance sessions.

At the end of this course you can progress onto Jazz harmony 2 and ensembles, Jazz woodshedding or Jazz vocal improvisation at City Lit.
