Explore the evidence in the New Testament and other sources for who Jesus was, what he did and why he was crucified. This will involve developing knowledge of the New Testament and biblical interpretation.

About this course

- explain and use basic principles of biblical interpretation
- identify key similarities and differences between the accounts of Jesus in four gospels in the New Testament
- explain the main theories for the sources of the gospel accounts of Jesus
- identify sources of evidence for Jesus outside the New Testament
- explain and apply key criteria for ascertaining the historical reliability of statements about Jesus in the New Testament.

• Please bring a pen and paper. A Bible or New Testament will also be helpful.

Course programme

- The similarities and differences in the presentation of Jesus in the four New Testament gospels.
- The sources used by the authors of the four gospels.
- Evidence for Jesus outside the New Testament in Jewish and Roman authors, and other gospels.
- The criteria scholars use for determining what is historically reliable in the gospels.

There will be a combination of individual and group activities, discussion and teacher explanation (including different media).

Other religious studies day courses in Term 1 include HRS23 They shall not grow old, during Remembrance weekend itself, focusing on religion, the war dead and remembrance 1914-39.
