Course programme

This class runs from 6.30pm-9pm once a week from the start date for five consecutive weeks. Please note: we don't close for bank holidays.

This beginners metal clay class gives you a chance to work with a fantastic material that produces great results. Each week we will be working towards making a new piece of beautiful silver jewellery that you can take home with you.

Techniques covered in this class include:
- Rolling out the clay to a consistent thickness
- Texturing and cutting out shapes
- Sanding, polishing and drilling
- Torch firing and basics of kiln firing
- Basic stone setting
- Adding multiple layers of clay
- Creating simple beads and much more.

Throughout the course you will be able to make 5 or more lovely pieces of solid silver jewellery and have lots of new ideas and inspiration to take away with you.

Class breakdown:

Week 1 - Introduction to metal clay and earring making. An experienced tutor will guide you through the basics of metal clay, what it is, different types and the pros and cons of each. You will then experiment with the clay and make a professional quality pair of silver earrings, or a pendent if you prefer. The aim of this week is to introduce students to the material and make a piece from start to finish. Torch firing will also be covered so that you can make pieces from home after the class.

Week 2 - Pendant making and stone setting. Learn the basics of set stones in metal clay and make a double layered stone set pendant.

Week 3 - Basic ring making. Make a simple wrap over ring, one of the most popular beginners projects. You will be learning sizing for ring making, texturing and how to fire rings.

Week 4 - Bead making. Learn to make a filigree bead using metal clay syringe. You will work with a material called cork clay to make a hollow form.

Week 5 - Combine your skills to make a lovely final project. This week you will be encouraged to put all of your new skills together and make a final project with the tutors support.

By the end of the course you will leave with a collection of beautiful silver jewellery pieces, as well as your new found skills in making silver jewellery which can be used as a hobby, for making presents for friends or perhaps even for a business idea. The course is aimed at complete beginners and the tutor will give you plenty of support and advice about carrying on working with metal clay after the class from home.

All materials are provided for you to make your pieces and we have a lovely studio fully equipped for working in metal clay.

This class is suitable for absolute beginners and everyone is welcome.

What you need to bring to this class: For this class you don't need to bring anything but yourself as everything is provided. However if you have any ideas of what you would like to make, feel free to bring pictures or sketches.

General Info: As with all of our classes, all materials are included in the cost of the class as well as plenty of tea coffee and luxury biscuits! The classes are all run by expert tutors with years of professional experience who are friendly, knowledgeable and approachable. The size of the classes is kept small to allow plenty of one-on-one attention and the maximum number of students for this class is 8.
