About this course

You will have at least 4 GCSEs at grade C. At least THREE must be from : English Language or Literature/Humanities (History,Geography,RS,Sociology,Psychology)/Business/Science (Core and Additional OR triple)/Maths. Alternatively you will have a DISTINCTION in a Level 2 Diploma OR an NVQ2 OR a CACHE Cert.

Journalism OCN Level 3
A practical and professional introduction to Journalism Skills. You will learn a range of skills in writing hard news, features and reviews, together with magazine and radio production skills. On completion, you will have a portfolio of work which will provide excellent evidence for future interviews.

What does the course involve?
The course is relevant to people considering a career in magazine, newspaper, radio, TV, or internet journalism. You will do the following: write news reports, features, and columns; review films, books, CDs and live events; develop interview techniques for print, radio and TV; understand more about career routes into the industry; train in page lay-out and use of Adobe InDesign, the industry standard DTP software; develop media researcher skills; understand more about the journalists' codes of practice; debate current issues around privacy or freedom of the press; write, lay-out and produce a magazine; research, record and edit a radio feature package; write for a local newspaper.

What will I study?
Two OCN units are covered, the first at level 2, the second at level 3. The course is taught for two hours per week over one year by a combination of College staff and professional journalists contributing on a part time basis. An opportunity for work experience is available, as is the chance to publish work in local newspapers. Assessment is through a portfolio of work, both published and produced as exercises. The assignments are set in collaboration with practising journalists. There are no exams.

What will the course lead to?
This qualification will help you if you apply to degree course in Journalism or related media degrees. It will also provide evidence to potential employers of your commitment to journalism and understanding of what it involves, as well providing proof of a level of aptitude. The portfolio of work, including published work, is a valuable asset. In addition, the course provides useful support for UCAS applications at a general level, showing evidence of a range of skills which can be applied whatever you choose to study.
