Law

Access to HEFC Higher Education
Law is an integral part of life, existing in almost everything we do. Law embraces activities as varied as the crime of bigamy to the law on clinical negligence and copyright. The legal system is undergoing a period of enormous change and new areas of law are emerging in the 21st Century.

This course aims to provide students with an appreciation of the role that law plays in modern life and to provide students with an understanding of the legal system. Most importantly, it aims to develop core legal skills that will equip students for study at degree level.

Course Content
The course is delivered in two units - both seeking to develop skills in research evaluation, analysis and in identifying and applying legal principles and concepts. Students will aquire a body of knowledge and be able to support conclusions with reference to appropriate legal authority.

Unit 1: The Legal System
This Unit provides a foundation for the study of law. It focuses on the nature and working of the legal system and topics covered include:- the idea of law, the sources of law, dispute resolution, the personnel of the law and the role of the judiciary and the participation of lay people in the legal process.

Unit 2: Civil and Criminal Liability
This unit provides an introduction to the law in the criminal civil justice systems. Students will study several areas of law in depth including the elements of a crime, murder, non-fatal offences and negligence.

Assessment

Unit 1
  • Coursework (one extended study or project -1500 words) - 60% of marks
  • End of Unit Test (1.5 hours) - 40% of marks


Unit 2
  • Coursework (assignment/essay - 1500 words) - 60% of marks
  • Examination (1.5 hours) - 40% of marks
