This course runs in 2016/17.

A successful lawyer has the ability to analyse a case, identify key facts, research the relevant law and communicate clearly the way forward. This course will give you the knowledge and expertise to do just that.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

Our LLB Law will develop your practical legal skills as well as providing you with an in-depth academic education, putting you in an excellent position both for future careers within, and outside, the legal profession.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

  • a course designed to meet the requirements of the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board;
  • the opportunity to volunteer in our Legal Advice Clinic, Business, Law and Enterprise Clinic or Employment Law Clinic and handle cases for real clients. Here you will be supervised by staff with many years' experience in practice;
  • experienced teaching staff who bring professional or research expertise into their teaching;
  • support in applying for a work placement which is a valuable experience;
  • the option to spend a year studying overseas which provides you with international experience that many businesses are looking for when employing a graduate;
  • regular guest lectures from employers who specialise in different areas of the law, giving you the opportunity to network with professionals;
  • a dedicated moot room, or mock court, where you will have the opportunity to develop your advocacy skills by presenting legal issues or problems against an opposing counsel and before a judge;
  • the opportunity to present a paper at our Law Student Conference with the possibility of publication in the Coventry Law Journal.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

All qualifying law degrees are required to cover the foundations of legal knowledge. These subjects are Contract Law, Tort Law, Criminal Law, Law of the European Union, Constitutional and Administrative Law, Property Law and Equity and Trusts, as well as the English Legal System.

The course will cover the foundations of legal knowledge and in the final year of study you will be able to select from a wide range of optional subjects including: Company Law, Employment Law, Family and Child Law, International Criminal Law, International Commercial Law, Public International Law and Intellectual Property Law.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Subjects are normally delivered through large group lectures and seminars of 15 students. Seminars are interactive and may involve hypothetical problems, case studies and the analysis of more theoretical issues. In addition, your personal tutor will monitor your progress and will be available for advice.

If you are interested in part-time study (which is taught during the day) please contact the Part-time Admissions team on +44 (0) 24 7765 4321 or email part-time.uni@coventry.ac.uk for further information, but please note that not all courses have a part-time option.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 65%; coursework, tests, essays 20%; practical or project work 5%; group work etc. 5%; presentations, posters etc. 5%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical week you will normally have up to 14 hours of teaching contact with staff. In addition, you can meet with your personal tutor or lecturing staff during published “office hours sessions” which will allow you to discuss problems or investigate further topics that interested you in a lecture.

An average teaching week will normally break down as:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 1 hour of tutorials each week

Medium group teaching: 4 hours of practical classes, workshops or seminars each week

Large group teaching: 9 hours of lectures each week

Personal study: 25 hours each week studying and revising in your own time including some guided study using handouts, online activities, etc.
