About this course
We require an 'A' level or equivalent qualification at Level 3, such as NVQ or BTEC
GCSEs at grade C or above, in English and Maths are also required
Equivalent qualifications are welcomed and maturity and experience are taken into account.
To apply, you need to be employed or acting in a voluntary capacity in a suitable learning context, such as classroom assistant, teaching assistant or unqualified teacher.

Course content
What will you study on the FdA Learning and Teaching?
The two year course aims to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding about learning and teaching in a diverse range of educational contexts, including early years, primary, secondary and special education provision. You will study four modules across each year of the course. The modules are all assessed by coursework, which includes written assignments, posters and presentations. Course and module information is indicative and may be subject to change.
Modules
You will study four compulsory modules across each year of the two year course. Each module has a 30 credit value. You will be encouraged to relate your learning on the modules to your workplace context.
Year 1Curriculum Studies 1 (30 credits) - Compulsory
This module aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of issues which influence current curriculum models in practice. The module focuses on the area of language development and aims to encourage critically evaluation how children’s language and communication skills are promoted and how adults can support this development.
Education Policy and Practice (30 credits) - CompulsoryThe aim of the module is to develop your effectiveness within the workplace through awareness of key principles and concepts in policy and practice within a historical and socio-political context. You are encouraged to consider the relevance and impact of policy to professionals working in learning and teaching contexts.
How Pupils Learn and Develop (30 credits) - CompulsoryThe module aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of a range of learning and developmental theories and perspectives that are applicable to children’s intellectual, social and emotional development. You are encouraged to consider how theories and perspectives on learning and development are applied in practice.
Inclusive Practices (30 credits) - CompulsoryThe aim of the module is to develop your effectiveness within the workplace through awareness of issues affecting equality, accessibility and inclusivity. It considers theories, principles and practice associated with concepts of class, ethnicity/race, gender, sexuality, Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND), English as an Additional Language (EAL), and Religion.
Year 2Behaviour Management (30 credits) - Compulsory
The module aims to enable application of developed understanding of behaviour management in supporting individualised and whole-group learning needs to school contexts. You are encouraged to consider approaches to managing challenging behaviour and investigate positive behaviour management of groups and individuals.
Curriculum Studies 2 (30 credits) - CompulsoryThe module aims to build on your knowledge and understanding of issues covered in the Curriculum Studies 1 module. This module has a focus on the areas of Mathematics and Science and you are encouraged to consider approaches that support the development of children’s mathematical and scientific thinking.
Professional Studies (30 credits) - CompulsoryThe module aims to develop your professional knowledge and professionalism. You will consider the role that parents and carers play in a child’s learning and development. You are encouraged to reflect on your own evolving principles and practice in relation to your roles in the workplace and consider your professional development.
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (30 credits) - CompulsoryThis module considers theoretical views of Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) and their application to practice. The module aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of children with SEND within educational contexts. You are encouraged to investigate SEND legislation, policy, practice and terminology.
You can find more information about this course in the programme specification. Optional modules are usually available at levels 5 and 6, although optional modules are not offered on every course. Where optional modules are available, you will be asked to make your choice during the previous academic year. If we have insufficient numbers of students interested in an optional module, or there are staffing changes which affect the teaching, it may not be offered. If an optional module will not run, we will advise you after the module selection period when numbers are confirmed, or at the earliest time that the programme team make the decision not to run the module, and help you choose an alternative module.
