Year 1
  • Introduction to life sciences
    This module provides an introduction to the functioning of the human body. It focuses on macro-systems, considering structure and function of all systems at a preliminary level to equip you with the necessary underpinning knowledge to inform first year nursing practice. You are introduced to essential concepts such as organisation of the body, homeostasis, anatomy and physiology. Emphasis at this stage is on breadth of knowledge. This module introduces the life-sciences content which is then developed further throughout the three year curriculum.
  • Practice skills for nursing
    This module is designed to prepare you to perform essential nursing skills to the standards required for the generic core element of the programme. Using safe, simulated environments, supervised placement experiences, and independent learning opportunities, students will be enabled to merge knowledge, practical ability and professional attitudes in promoting quality patient/client care. The module will focus on the development and use of appropriate professional values; clinical, problem solving and interpersonal skills that underpin safe caring practices.
  • Professional values, ethics and law
    This module is designed to ensure you develop a foundational understanding of your professional, ethical and legal responsibilities. The focus is on developing an appreciation of the professional codes, ethical values and legal frameworks which underpins health care practice. Emphasis will be placed upon understanding of the need to use up-to-date knowledge including ethical, legal and professional obligations to assess, plan, deliver and evaluate care, communicate findings, influence change and promote health, welfare and best practice.
  • Social sciences and nursing
    This module will take a sociological and physiological focus that introduces you to the theories that explain people's behaviour and their response to social situations within the context of health and social care. Taking a life course approach the module aims to explain which groups are vulnerable and how adopting a person centred approach to practice and concepts of empowerment might enable these groups to maintain autonomy.
  • Concepts and theories of learning disability nursing
    This module explores definitions, causes and diagnosis of learning disability (LD), along with its aetiology and prevalence. Historical service perspectives, policies and societal attitudes relating to learning disability and the progression to contemporary practices are critically explored. The role of the Learning Disabilities (LD) nurse in the context of present-day service delivery is defined and scrutinised, facilitating the development of professional identity. Learning disability-specific legislation and current good practice guidelines are introduced. Ethical issues such as mental capacity, consent and choice are analysed.
  • Personal effectiveness and communication
    This module will enhance self-awareness, and enable you to learn communication and interpersonal skills in relating to people with a learning disability, their carers and families. You will be introduced to augmentative and alternative communication methods as well as therapeutic use of self. You will be exposed to a wide range of communication methods, focusing on the use of effective communication in all stages of care and the service delivery process. It will help you to integrate learning from other modules and develop reflective practice.
Year 2
  • Mental wellbeing and physical health
    From a lifecourse perspective the bio psychosocial outcomes of the experience of health and illness will be explored from all field perspectives within the context of the delivery of care. So that the experience of mental health, physical illness and learning disabilities will be explored within the context of children's and adults lives and the impact these may have on physical and mental wellbeing.
  • Public health and health policy
    This module explores National and International health policies, incorporating all fields of nursing further enhancing the professional, legal and ethical concepts already developed in Year 1. It allows you to investigate issues that have an impact on the health of individuals and communities, recognising the importance of supportive social, physical and cultural environments to promote good health. It will examine the broader social, economic, environmental and political factors that impact health and wellbeing, it also explores the relationship between theory and practice and analyses the factors that shape the nations' health care policies.
  • Research methods and use of evidence
    This module introduces you to the diverse and innovative approaches to research methodologies through which you will gain knowledge and understanding of the central place of research in nursing practice. The module will equip you with the knowledge to draw on research and research methodologies in order to locate, review and evaluate research findings to enhance evidence-based practice across all fields of nursing. The module content has been systematically designed to enable you to develop analytical skills to further deepen your knowledge and improve your practice. Delivery of the module will combine classroom sessions with group seminar activities and electronic activities on blackboard to ensure a blended approach to learning.
  • Health and wellbeing
    People with learning disabilities (LD) face many health inequalities, and the challenges to their health can differ from those of the general population. This module ensures that you understand these health issues, and are enabled to act upon these in practice. The module ensures you understand health in its broader sense, encompassing spiritual, emotional mental and physical well-being, as well as understanding the role of the LD nurse in relation to this. The module also covers health promotion and public health roles.
  • Assessment, planning and managing care
    This module builds upon previous learning enabling you to develop assessment, planning, implementation and evaluative skills pivotal for effective care delivery for people with learning disabilities, their families and carers. Person-centred planning, a range of nursing frameworks and assessment tools will be introduced. You will be encouraged to begin to analyse these tools in the context of service delivery. You will further develop skills in physical and mental health assessment, risk assessment, care management and care programme approach, assessment of social functioning and skills for independence, advocacy, empowerment and enablement, health checking and health action planning.
  • Supporting people in mainstream services
    People with learning disabilities (LD) face health inequalities which are compounded by the difficulties that they face in accessing health services. This module explores the social, economic, and cultural factors which influence this. This module looks at the rights of the individual with learning disabilities in relation to health and health care, and looks at good practice in this area. It focuses on the role of the LD nurse in facilitating access to health services, and equips students with the knowledge and skills to identify and address these issues within ethical and nursing frameworks, using current principles of care and support.
Year 3
  • Politics of health
    This unit develops knowledge of the process of health care policy making. It considers contemporary political influences upon health care policy and the implications for the nursing profession and patient care.
  • Leadership, management and supervision
    This module will build effective leadership and management skills in a complex and multidimensional health care setting. Recognising that leadership skills are predicated on interpersonal skills, the module will address issues of communication. This module will be the theoretical underpinning of leadership and management skills in order to prepare you for a management placement.
  • Interventions for people with learning disabilities
    This module will provide the underpinning information and evidence –base to build skills in a range of interventions for people with learning disabilities. You will explore and analyse a range of concepts, theories and models including learning disability specific legislation, research evidence and current good practice. This will enable you to apply theory to practice in a range of complex contexts, and to specific groups within the learning disabled population, for example; older adults and children within ethical and nursing frameworks. You will be able to evaluate the impact of various interventions, their benefits and risks in terms of persons' with learning disabilities, their families and or carers, and be able to analyse and reflect upon the wider impact of interventions on autonomy, choice and quality of life.
  • Providing support across the lifespan
    Learning Disability (LD) nurses work with individuals with learning disabilities throughout their lives, from infancy to older age. This module focuses on changes through the lifespan of people with learning disabilities, and the issues that affect individuals at each stage. It equips you with the knowledge and skills to identify and address these issues within ethical and nursing frameworks, using current principles of care and support.
  • Practice development in learning disability nursing
    This module focuses on the use of evidence-based practice in Learning Disability (LD) Nursing in order to assist you to become consumers of research as well as innovative practitioners able to advance LD nursing practice. This module will integrate the following broad perspectives including evidence based practice, research methodology, along with practice development and change management processes.
  • Complex needs and dual diagnoses
    This module builds upon previous learning, providing specialist, in-depth knowledge of various conditions which can co-exist with learning disability. The module integrates previously learned assessment skills with new, specialist information, and requires you to develop your proficiency as a Learning Disability practitioner. The module encourages you to understand and critically reflect upon your role and responsibilities as a Learning disability nurse.
