Course programme
The Apprenticeship in Legal Services is a structured programme of learning which combines work-based learning with academic learning, leading to nationally recognised qualifications. It includes qualifications which assess these two main forms of learning. The knowledge qualification is often described as a `pathway' through the apprenticeship which enables an apprentice to develop the skills and understanding specifically relevant to the area of legal practice in which they work. The competence qualification is a generic work-based qualification relevant to all Legal Services apprentices.
To get on the course you will need five GCSEs at grade C or above, or equivalent. These passes must include English Language, Maths and a science subject.
To be eligible for this course you will need to be in relevant employment. Some of the potential roles can include:
- Caseworker
- Junior Paralegal
- Legal Assistant
- Trainee Legal Executive
- Conveyancing Assistant
- Litigation Assistant
The assessment of your apprenticeship is an ongoing process throughout the year. You'll have a number of specific skills and experience that you must get marked off by your employer or college tutor to prove that you reached a certain level of understanding.
At the College you will be assessed by doing written work and assignments which go towards your formal qualification. At the work place you will be assessed by your supervisor on day to day activities basis for your practical assessment.
After completion of the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Legal Services you can progress into:Jobs
- more senior roles within civil litigation and wider Legal Services such as senior paralegal
- professional roles within the legal sector such as Licensed Conveyancer, Notary, Chartered Legal Executive, Solicitor, Barrister, Costs Lawyer, Patent Attorney, Trade Mark Attorney (these will require significant further training and study, see this careers link for further information http://www.sfjuk.com/sectors/legal-services/)
- other roles within the legal sector such as Legal Adviser.
