About this course
Anyone who wants to explore basic counselling skills and decide whether they wishto go further with counselling training, or who wants to use counselling skillsinformally with family or at work. It is not suitable for people looking for psychological assistance to deal with personal issues.
This course builds on diverse life/family/work skills which participants bring to increase awareness and ability to listen. You will have completed the level 1 Interpersonal Course or have relevant experience. You need a good level of oral and written English to participate in the course, ideally level 2 (GCSE) as you will need to read handouts, write assignments and produce a portfolio of work. How will I learn?
A participative approach using tutor input, role plays, discussion, research, group and paired work, case studies and demonstrations backed up with handouts to reinforce learning.
How will my progress be monitored and assessed?
Student file and reflective journal, and your tutor’s record of achievement. The file and reflective journal are submitted for Internal and External Exam Board Moderation purposes.

What equipment or materials will I need to provide?
Basic writing materials - pen, paper and a notebook for your journal. You will also need a file for your portfolio. You may wish to buy certain key text books, your tutors will be able to advise.
What other support is available?
Help with numeracy or literacy is available. ICT drop-in sessions are available during term time and are open to all learners. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Learner Support Funding is available for equipment, childcare and travel to learners who qualify.
