To enrol on this course you will need to have either: The Level 1 Certificate in Interpersonal Skills or a Level 1 Counselling qualification or a similar award in terms of length of study, time and content or certified practical experience of using counselling skills (eg with a voluntary agency) over at least 50 hours.

Unit 1 Introduction to using Counselling Skills
This unit is concerned with the acquisiton and practice of the Core Counselling Skills needed to establish and maintain a sound 'working alliance', facilitating the helping relationship. Ethical practice, particluarly in relation to own competence, to endings and to referral procedures is stressed. The importance of Equality of Opportunity and of Cultural Diversity is integral to all skills work.
Unit 2 The context for the use of Counselling Skills
The unit requires candidates to reflect on how the personality, skills, biases and belief systems of the helper affect a helping relationship. In addition to an awareness of their own practice and use of counselling skills, candidates are encouraged to indentify deficits and to devise realistic plans for increasing knowledge and enhancing skills.

Internally assessed and externally moderated portfolio.

Progression opportunities:
Successful completion of this course will allow entry to Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills and Theory.
