There will be opportunities to visit animal care organisations including wildlife parks, zoos and small businesses. You will also be involved with our unique ‘Careers Week’, which aims to inspire you and give you the opportunity to meet a variety of employers. Also included will be the opportunity to take part in activities designed to enhance your experiences of this industry such as Wolf Watch UK, beach cleans, an annual dog show and other events.

Course programme

This programme is designed to give you a good understanding of how to care for animals, develop your practical skills and help you to appreciate the extent of this vibrant and growing industry. At the Holme Lacy Campus we are able to offer this course through a combination of classroom-based and practical workshops utilising our fully-equipped animal care unit. Our aim is to provide an excellent vocational experience in which you will learn how to care, understand behaviours and enhance the welfare of a broad collection of animals, from common domestic pets to exotic reptiles and birds. Learners will have the opportunity to gain a recognised First Aid qualification and other experiences designed to improve employability skills.
Level 2 C&G Diploma in Animal Care
One year
You will cover a diverse range of topics throughout your course. A selection of unit titles is shown below.
Assessment is continuous, with assignments, projects and practical work. This course includes 150 hours of work experience gained from working one day a week on our animal care unit and with block weeks within an industry setting.
All students following a full-time programme of study at HLC will study English and maths as part of their studies, please refer to the Study Programmes page of this website.
There are various opportunities for further study or employment upon successful completion of your course.
