What are the Course Details?
This course addresses the needs of learners aiming for employment in the IT industry, and those already employed in the industry who want to improve their skills.

The qualification links closely to candidates' professional development and reflects the needs of the employers.

The course is designed to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in the full range of functions involved in System Support, including:
  • Maintenance of Computer Systems
  • Installation of Hardware and Software
  • Testing of Systems
  • Production of Customer Support Materials

This is a one year full-time course although a part-time option may be available depending on demand.


Is the Course for Me?
All candidates are expected to be self-motivated, flexible, willing to learn and keen to contribute to their own success.

You will need, above all else, to be interested in computer maintenance and want to equip yourself with a qualification that can make a difference to your life.


What are the Entry Requirements?
Candidates will typically have GCSEs in Maths and English at Grade D or above (or equivalent). Successful completion of a Certificate in Information Technology would be an advantage.

Applications are welcome from mature learners, who will be considered subject to a satisfactory reference and interview.


What will I Learn?
You will be expected to study up to five units including:
  • Maintaining Equipment and Systems
  • Providing Customer Support
  • Installing Hardware/Equipment and Systems
  • Installing and Maintaining Applications and System Testing
  • Computer Maintenance and Installation (Cisco IT Essentials)

Functional Skills are also an integral part of this qualification.


How will I Learn?
The majority of the work is completed using computer-based assignments, although other methods may be used.

As IT learners you will be allocated a storage area on the College network, it is however strongly advised that you have a USB flash drive for maximum flexibility.


How will I be Assessed?
Units are assessed either through the completion of tasks/projects, assignments or through multiple choice tests.


What Enrichments are Available?
There are many College wide enrichment opportunities which may vary dependent on uptake. There are computer specific enrichment opportunities, covering topics such as web design, digital graphics etc... plus many other options including many sporting and other activities to ensure you get the most out of College life.


Are there any Trips or Visits?
Trips and visits do not form a part of this course.


Is there any Work Experience?
Work experience does not form a mandatory part of this course.


What can I Progress to?
Successful learners who complete this qualification have the following opportunities for progression:

Certificate for IT Practitioners (ICT Systems Support) at Level 3 which extends their knowledge and skills working with ICT systems or the BTEC National Award IT Practitioner.
