This programme is for individuals who have an interest in the construction industry and wish to develop their employment skills, dealing with the maintenance and upkeep of buildings. This programme could lead to employment within maintenance companies in both the private and public sectors, such as housing associations, local councils, schools, hospitals and hotels, or you could run your own maintenance company or work in a management/supervisory role in a maintenance department. Alternatively you could progress onto an Apprenticeship or a Level 3 programme.

Course programme

What does this programme involve? The one year programme (36 weeks) is run over three days per week and will include both theoretical and practical based work. Generic units include: - Health and safety - Building technology - Understanding information, communication and calculations - Scaffolding - Developing customer relationships Trade areas include: -Small scale masonry repairs (painting and decorating, plumbing, carpentry, roofing, tiling and plastering) You will also undertake work experience and work related learning activities as organised by the College.The programme consists of 18 hours per week in College, made up of of six hours of theory work and 12 hours of practical work. Each unit of work will involve both theory and practical work and will feature an online test and a timed practical assignment to show competence. All theory lessons will involve students to work independently on computers or in group discussions. Practical work will be demonstrated by fully trained tutors prior to students carrying out the tasks themselves. Work will then be assessed by the tutor with verbal or written feedback given.
