Engineering
BTEC First Diploma - One-year course
The BTEC First Diploma in Engineering provides a good foundation for future career opportunities or progression to a more advanced work-related qualification. There are a range of units that students cover over a one-year period. All students take the following four core units:
  • Working Practices in Engineering
  • Using and Interpreting Engineering Information
  • Applied Electrical and Mechanical Science for Technicians
  • Mathematics for Engineering Technicians Specialist units, which enable students to study a particular area in more depth, such as:
  • Selecting and Using Secondary Machine Techniques to Remove Metal
  • Using CAD Techniques in Engineering
  • Engineering Assembly Techniques
  • Application of Quality Control and Measurement in Engineering

All work will be assessed by coursework. Students will need to produce detailed evidence to prove their ability to solve a range of problems which they may face within the workplace.

Careers and Further Studies
The BTEC First Diploma can develop the skills students need to start or progress in an operator or junior technician role, such as maintenance or manufacturing. Students will need to achieve either a Merit or Distinction within the BTEC First Diploma to enable them to progress to the BTEC National Certificate in Engineering.

General Entry Requirements
At least two GCSEs at grade D or above or a BTEC Introductory Diploma (or equivalent) in a related area at Merit level.
