Course programme
Level 3 Art, Design and Media is delivered over two years. In the first year of the programme, students complete units for a Diploma. Upon successful completion of these units, students work towards completing the full Extended Diploma in Art, Design and Media in year two.
Students will learn and develop skills through the use of industry standard software and facilities, preparing them for higher education/employment. You will also be able to study aspects of professional practice within the art and design industry as part of the programme.
Projects will be professionally based and will allow you to explore design development, computer imaging techniques, visual recording techniques and visual communication methods. All assignments and projects are closely focused on individual and personal development within the visual arts area.
During the second year of the programme, students are given the opportunity to specialise and develop work within one of the following pathways: Fine Art, Photography, Graphic Design, Fashion and Textiles, Fashion Styling, Animation and Video Production.
Students will follow two individually chosen units in their chosen pathway and develop a body of work in preparation for progression. In year 2, students create their own Project Proposal; researching, developing and producing a body of work exploring a subject defined by each individual learner. We offer a unique programme of workshops in the first term, allowing students to gain experience in using the equipment and facilities within the department and develop focused technical knowledge. You will be assessed on your artwork and research skills through practical tasks and assignments. Level 3 is made up of a total of 18 units, with the opportunity to meet the requirements of units through a range of specialist assignment briefs. The programme hours will vary slightly throughout the initial workshop stage of the programme but the majority of the programme will be 15 hours per week. You will be required to work additionally on your assignment work outside of your main programme hours and students will have access to studio spaces and facilities during College hours to assist in this.
All students without a GCSE at grade A*-C in English or Maths will be required, as a condition of the programme, to undertake either a GCSE or Functional Skills programme.
The Level 3 18 unit structure means that, on successful completion, this programme is the equivalent of three A Levels (six AS Levels).
