Brief Description of the Course:

(NB: All programmes are based on credit accumulation. Each unit of study is worth either 5 or 10 credits towards the total amount needed to achieve the qualification).

Myerscough College is pleased to offer a new specialism within our popular Sports & Exercise Sciences portfolio; the launch of our new Myerscough Netball Division, offering high quality netball courses and training. The new Sport & Exercise Science (Netball) programme is a joint venture in partnership with Manchester Thunder Netball, reigning Super league champions; supported by international players and coaches.

Students receive high quality coaching throughout the week - from both a team and individual perspective. The course combines academic lessons, coaching sessions, physiotherapy/rehabilitation clinics, competitive fixtures and tournaments abroad. It is supported by qualified tutors and highly experienced coaches. Myerscough Netball offers the highest quality netball coaching and development available in the UK for players aged 16 and over, as well as competitive netball in the AoC/British College Sport system.

Myerscough College is superbly equipped for the teaching of netball, with many great resources at the Bilsborrow centre in Preston and additional regional training and coaching venues. What Myerscough Netball can offer:

The College offers the opportunity to study at level 3 (A level equivalent) for students who wish to develop a comprehensive understanding of Sport and Exercise Sciences and Netball - encompassing practical techniques, academic knowledge and technical skills. It is a popular option for both school leavers and successful Level 2 Diploma students. The course incorporates a mix of practical’s, classroom lectures, industry visits and case study exercises.

For learners with 4 GCSEs including English Language and Maths or Science at Grade C or above, the Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma has 6 units (60 Credits) of study and makes up the first year of the Level 3 Diploma qualification, 12 units (120 Credits) for learners that wish to study for 1 or 2 years. Students wishing to do the Level 3 Diploma over 2 years must have 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above including English Language and Maths or Science or another Level 2 qualification at Merit level with a Key Skill at Level 2.

Applicants with at least 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above including English Language, Maths and Science or course specific (which could include Chemistry, Combined Science, Biology, Physics or PE etc) will be able to apply for the Level 3 Extended Diploma studied over 2 years (Year 1 consists of a stand-alone 90 credit Diploma. You will require a top up second year to achieve the Extended Diploma).

Students will also receive training and assessment in a large range of additional qualifications, which will enhance their employability.

Entry Criteria:

These courses give a good technical training and education providing a vocational alternative to A Levels and the opportunity for successful students to progress to Higher Education. Students are normally aged 16 or over and the following requirements are needed:

Advanced Level 3 Suite:

· Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma - (60 credits in 1 year)

4 GCSEs at Grade C or above (including English Language and Maths or Science), or an Intermediate Level course (e.g. Level 2 Diploma at Pass including at least one Functional Skill at Level 2),or equivalent qualifications.

· Level 3 BTEC 90 Credit Diploma - (90 credits in 1 year)

5 GCSEs at Grade C or above including Maths and English Language plus one course specific GCSE such as Science, Biology or PE or an Intermediate Level course (eg First Diploma at Distinction including at least one Functional Skill at level 2 in either Application of Number or Communication), or equivalent qualifications.

· Level 3 BTEC Diploma (120 credits)

4 GCSEs at Grade C or above (including English Language and Maths or Science), or an Intermediate Level course (e.g. Level 2 Diploma at Pass including at least one Functional Skill at Level 2),or equivalent qualifications.

· Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma - (180 credits in 2 years) (year 1 is a 90 credit stand alone Diploma)

5 GCSEs at Grade C or above including Maths and English Language plus one course specific GCSE such as Science, Biology or PE or an Intermediate Level course (eg First Diploma at Distinction including at least 1 key skill at level 2 in either Application of Number or Communication), or equivalent qualifications.

  • Anatomy for Sport and Exercise - Explores the structure and function of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
  • Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise - Enables learners to gain an understanding of fitness testing and the importance of health screening and health monitoring tests.
  • Fitness Training and Programming – Looks at to planning fitness training sessions and design fitness training programmes.
  • Practical Team Sports - Explores the skills, techniques, tactics and rules of team sports through practical participation.
  • Research Methods for Sport and Exercise - Explores data collection analysis techniques, the research process and the way in which research can be applied in a sport and exercise context.
  • Sport and Exercise Physiology – Provides an understanding of how the body physiologically reacts to the onset and continuation of physical activity. It will also consider the mechanisms of fatigue and recovery.
  • Sport and Exercise Psychology - Develops understanding of how psychology can be applied to sports performance and exercise environments.
  • Sports Injuries - Provides an overview of injury prevention, identification and basic treatment. The unit also explores differing rehabilitatory interventions for common sports injuries.
  • Sports Nutrition - Provides a broad understanding of the importance of nutrition and hydration to a variety of sports participants.
  • Analysis of Sports Performance - Explores the purpose and importance of sports performance analysis, highlighting the multi-dimensional demands and interdependence of the different factors involved.
  • Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology – Examines how the body physiologically reacts to the onset and continuation of physical activity. It also considers the mechanisms of fatigue and recovery.
  • Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology - Develops understanding of how psychology can be applied to sports performance and exercise environments.
  • Exercise, Health and Lifestyle - Assesses the lifestyle of an individual and provides advice on lifestyle improvement.
  • Outdoor and Adventurous Activities – Allows learners to participate in exciting activities in the outdoors, learning and applying practical skills and techniques, further developing their leadership skills and qualities.
  • Research Project in Sport and Exercise Sciences – Investigates the production of a sport or exercise science-based research project applying accepted academic conventions for project design.
  • Sport and Exercise Massage - Provides an understanding of the theory and practice of sport and exercise massage techniques.
  • Sports Biomechanics in Action - Enables learners to undertake notational analysis of sport and exercise, comparing performance using either a numerical or technical model and provide feedback to an athlete or team to improve performance.
  • Sports Coaching - Develops an understanding and knowledge of the roles, responsibilities, skills and techniques of a sports coach and how to apply them whilst coaching and/or leading sports sessions.

Assessments:

Assessments will include assignments, presentations and reports. There are no formal examinations on the Level 3 BTEC Diploma.

Industrial / Work Experience :

Students will be encouraged to find work within the industry to support their studies.

Possible Careers / Jobs:

Employment opportunities in Sport & Exercise Science and its related industries are currently very good. The Subsidiary, Diploma and Extended Diploma Sport & Exercise Science (Netball) provides the qualification and experience for entry into the industry at an operational level with future prospects for management.

Progression:

As a course equivalent to A Level the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma is an ideal spring board for progression to a Foundation Degree or Full Degree depending on UCAS points gained.
