About the OCR

Oxford, Cambridge and Royal Society of Arts (OCR) have been standard setters in the field of education and have designed this qualification among many others to provide candidates with high quality, industry- recognised qualifications geared to specific requirements of key sectors. Health and social care is one such primary sector that needs trained professionals. This qualification has been accredited onto the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) at Level 2 by QCA – Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. QCA is a non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Government for the Education and Skills (DfES). The QCA (Open Quals.) references are Certificate - 100/3338/5, Diploma – 100/3339/7 and extended Diploma – 100/3340/3.

What is OCR Level 3 Nationals in Health and Social Care?

The OCR Level 3 Nationals in Health and social Care has been developed to follow on Level 2 qualifications to recognise candidates’ skills, knowledge and understanding of the Health and social care sector and the settings, job roles, principles and values involved. It accredits candidates’ abilities to carry out a range of tasks. It has been designed to accredit candidates’ achievements in a modern and practical way that is relevant to the work place. It does not certificate competence on the job but is a work-related qualification that will support progression to an NVQ once a candidate is in the work place.

What is OCR Level 3 National Certificate in Health and Social Care for?

This qualification specifically aims to:
• Develop candidates’ knowledge and understanding of Health and Social Care.
• Develop candidates’ skills, knowledge and understanding in contexts that are directly relevant to employment situations, thereby enhancing their employability within the health and social care sector.
• Develop candidates’ ability to work effectively in a health and social care sector.
• Enable candidates to demonstrate knowledge and understanding in specialist areas of health and social care and demonstrate the skills to participate in real situations.
• Encourage progression by assisting into the development of skills, knowledge and understanding that will need to access further education opportunities or occupational training on a full-time or part-time basis.
• Promote interaction between employers, centres and candidates by relating teaching and assessment to real settings.

Course summary

The course is delivered through:

360 taught/ contact hours for Certificate level for 4 mandatory and 2 optional units, over 9 months or one academic year.
720 taught/ contact hours for Diploma level for 4 mandatory and 8 optional units, over 18 months or over an academic year.
1080 taught/ contact hours for Extended Diploma for 4 mandatory and 14 optional units, over two academic years.

Entry requirements
This qualification is available to anyone who has completed Level 2 or capable of reaching the required standards. It has been developed free from any barriers that restrict access or progressions thereby promoting equal opportunities.

The structure of the course
There are four mandatory units:
Unit 1 – Working to quality practice in care settings
Unit 2- Working with service users in care settings
Unit 3- Behavioural awareness in Care
Unit 4- Applied practical care in settings
The optional units suggested by Regal:
Unit 23 Working with Children in educational settings
Unit 25 Child Development

Assessment
The assessments are both externally/ internally set, and centre-assessed and externally moderated by OCR. All units are graded: pass, merit, distinction, fail. Full award certificates will be graded: pass, merit, distinction.

• May enter employment at trainee level, e.g. training to become a care assistant
• May enter employment and undertake a related NVQ at a level appropriate to the job role, e.g. NVQ Care, NVQ Early Years Care and Education.

After OCR Level 3 National Certificate in Health and Social Care

This qualification has been designed to develop skills, knowledge and understanding required to enable progression to qualifications along the vertical and horizontal planes in the National Qualifications Framework. Candidates achieving OCR Level 3 National Certificate in Health and Social care may:
- Undertake additional Level 3 qualifications e.g. OCR Level 3 National Certificate/ Diploma/ Extended diploma in Health, Social care and early years, VCE in Health and Social care A/ level etc.-Undertake level 4 qualifications or progress to a Degree in related fields.

Progression into employment -These qualifications are designed to offer candidates the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding that will prepare them for entry into employment at trainee level within a wide range of health, social care and early years care and education environments. Many such candidates would undertake further part-time study with the support of their employer.
