The Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) programme supports teaching assistants and other school support staff in demonstrating their knowledge and skills. Successful assessment against HLTA standards would lead to gaining HLTA status.

HLTAs work across the curriculum, acting as specialist assistants for specific subjects or departments, or helping to plan lessons and develop support materials. They work closely with teachers, complementing their role and allowing them more time to develop each pupil to their potential.

To help schools ensure consistent application of the standards and to maintain the high-quality of HLTAs St. Helens College is now working with the HLTA national assessment partnership HLTA North. This new partnership will support head teachers in equipping and assessing their staff to ensure they meet the standards expected.

The benefits of HLTA Status for the TA and your school include:

  • By going through the HLTA process your staff will further their skills, knowledge, confidence and ability to perform the required role.
  • The standards also confirm that the TA is sufficiently skilled to teach, including planning and delivering lessons, under the direct supervision of a teacher.

This is determined through rigorous assessment of the following areas:

  • Professional Attributes
  • Professional Knowledge and Understanding
  • Professional Skills
  • Planning and Expectations
  • Monitoring and Assessment
  • Teaching and Learning Activities

Following successful completion of the HLTA process HLTAs have reported a positive impact on the children / students they work with following their participation in the HLTA process.

Head teachers have reported significant savings regarding staffing of teacher absences and a reduction in the costings of utilising supply staff.
