Course programme

The HND in Construction and the Built Environment is a part-time programme designed for students who are 18 or over with an appropriate knowledge of construction or employed in the industry.

This programme of study, which is highly regarded by employers and academic institutions, builds upon the Pearson BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment. It is suitable for anyone who wishes to gain higher-level professional qualifications or who wants to move on to further study in higher education.
Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment.


Achievement: The Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma is achieved by passing all units on this top up programme.

The Pearson BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment is 120 credits, so successful completion of the top up (125 credits across 8 units) will lead to the award of the Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (245 credits total).

The awarding body for the Pearson BTEC Level 5 HNC Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment is Pearson and Highbury College is the provider of the programme of study.

You will have a BTEC Level 4 or similar qualification, or you will have 4 GCSEs grade A*-C plus one A-Level. Alternatively you will be a mature student with relevant experience.


Age: Over 18.

Qualifications: You will need to have completed and passed a current Pearson BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment.

Non-native English speakers: English language skills equivalent to an IELTS score of at least 5.5, with a minimum of 5.0 in each individual section (listening and reading, writing, speaking).
You will be assessed by a range of methods including assignments and projects.


Teaching: Lectures, workshops, online learning and weekly tutorials.

Independent study: You will need to undertake significant independent study outside of taught sessions. For every 1 taught hour students should spend at least 2 hours studying independently away from College, equating to at least 16 hours per week. The Environmental Impact and Management Principles units are delivered on a self-study basis with online support and require significant independent study.

Assessment methods: Assessment is on a continuous basis with up to two assignments in each unit. Assessment is via coursework which takes a variety of forms including written reports, presentations, and written reflections.

Staff: Full-time, part-time and associate lecturers (corporate associates) may teach on the HND Construction and the Built Environment programme. Staff teaching on the programme have a variety of commercial/industrial and/or teaching experience.
