AS Level in Art and Design (Graphics)
Course summary:
This one-year course leads to an AS level, which is a qualification in its own right. It can also be used as the first half (50%) of an A level qualification.
Course content:
This is a one year course comprising of 2 units:-
· Unit 1 is the building of a portfolio of work through a series of introductory design projects set to broaden the candidates knowledge and experience.
· Unit 2 is an externally set assignment over a given period of time. Candidates select one of five starting points, producing preparatory and finished pieces of work.
On the A level course with an endorsement in Graphics, students will develop their visual language and communication skills within a range of media including work on computers.
Exploration and analysis of issues are encouraged and sketchbook work emphasised.
Students will discuss and assess contemporary and historical examples of graphics to aid their awareness of the subject.
Students' work should include one or more area(s) of Graphic Design, such as those listed below:
- Communication and/or computer graphics
- Illustration
- Advertising and packaging
- Film, television, animation and/or video
Course structure:
The course is 4.5 hours per week.

Progression opportunities:
Successful students could progress to an A2 Level in Art and Design (Graphics) then a BTEC Diploma in Foundation Studies leading to a degree in Art and Design.
