If you are aged 16-18 and study on a full-time, further education programme then your course is free.
If you are over 18 then grants and loans may be available to help towards course fees.
Is it for me?
Physical Education is offered for study at AS level in Year 12 and A2 level in Year 13.
What will I study?
  • The AS level course consists of 3 units
  • The social basis of sport: - UK & the European context, the Olympic case study.
  • Enhancing performance: - acquiring skill, practical performance, analysis of performance, national and local provision.
  • Exercise and training: - anatomy and physiology of exercise, training systems, components of fitness.
  • Global trends in international sport: - world cultures; synoptic analysis of trends.
  • Refining performance: - factors affecting performance, personal exercise plan, practical performance.
  • Scientific principles of exercise and performance:- exercise and energy systems, sports physiology, synoptic analysis of scientific principles in the development of performance
Assessment
AS level students are assessed in units 1 and 3 by written exam at the end of the year. Unit 2 is assessed by practical performance and written coursework. A level students are assessed in units 4 and 6 by written exam at the end of the year. Unit 5 is assessed by practical performance and written coursework
How will I be taught?
Students are expected to work on their practical performance and personal exercise plans in their own time. They should be members of teams or clubs and play regularly. Analysis of performance is usually completed with younger students and this could also lead to a Community Sports Leader award. Students participating in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme can use trekking as one of their two practical activities. This course is taught at Gateshead Stadium
What qualification will I get?
GCSE AS Level /A Level Physical Education P.E.
Can I go onto further study?
Students go on to follow degree courses in Sports science, P.E. teaching, and Sports management. Others follow coaching courses, may become sports development officers for governing bodies or follow sports / leisure management courses.
Does it include key skills?
All students following full time courses will be expected to develop their skills in English, Maths and ICT.
