AS Level in Sociology
Course content:
The value of sociology lies in its ability to help you better understand processes that are taking place within society. With this understanding you will be able to â€-choose†your own opinions and views from a broad range rather than just accept the narrow range that has previously been presented.
You will also be better able to understand the underlying assumptions and values about society which underpin what are often considered as â€-obvious†, â€-truthful†, or â€-scientifically-based†conclusions.
Sociology does not come neatly gift-wrapped requiring little more than for you to unpack it. Sociology is an inherently controversial subject which deals with problems which should be of pressing interest to us all, problems which are the objects of major controversies and conflicts within society itself. Studying sociology will give you a better insight into the world in which you live and a greater understanding of people in general.
This course is intended to provide you with:
- a critical understanding of the contemporary social practices and social changes
- Skills which enable individuals to focus on their personal identity roles and responsibilities within society
- Lifelong learning in social issues.
During the course you will study the following topics:
- SY1 Acquiring culture: Families and Households
- SY2 Understanding culture: Religion (this topic will also incorporate research methods)
Assessment procedure:
The course will be assessed through two externally set and marked examination papers (SY1 60 minutes and SY2 90 minutes). The examination will be set at the end of your year of study.(Summer)
Qualifications achieved:
GCE AS Level Sociology
Progression opportunities:
If you pass the examination and are successful you can either claim your AS level certificate or you can continue into a second year where, provided you are successful in the final examinations (both of 1¼ duration), and coursework, you can claim an A level certificate.
