Why study Biology?
Why do some people get colds all the time and others don't? How do scientists isolate genes from one organism and transfer them to another? How can your heart beat without you telling it to do so? How do scientists know the fine details of cells? If you would like to know the answers then A-level Biology is for you.
What do I study?
Year 1 (AS)
Consists of three units - two theoretical and one practical. These will cover basic biological concepts such as cells, biological molecules, enzymes, exchange and transport as well as biodiversity, variation and evolution.
Year 2 (A2)
Consists of three units - two theoretical and one practical. These will cover human physiology such as homeostasis, excretion and response as well as more modern aspects of biology such as biotechnology.
Where does Biology take me?
Biology is a recognised academic subject and can lead on to careers in Medicine, Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Forestry, Marine Biology, Agriculture, Veterinary Science, as well as opportunities with many industrial, scientific and government laboratories and organisations. It is also useful for teaching. There are many other non-scientific careers for which Biology may be useful.
What do I need?
Core and Additional Sciences or Triple Sciences grade B or better plus grade C in Maths and good communication skills. Any student considering pursuing a Biological career should also do Chemistry at least to AS level.
