Lowland Navigation Adventure Development 1

Navigation in the valleys requires very careful study of the map and a thorough understanding of farming issues and rights of way. Spend 3 spring evenings out and about in beautiful Dentdale with a local expert developing your confidence in using map and compass.

What will the course cover and how will it be taught?
The aim of the course is to help you to navigate successfully using map, compass and an understanding of lowland terrain. The following topics will be studied:

• Setting the map
• Relating map to ground and ground to map
• Getting as much information as possible from the map
• Developing "map memory"
• Timing and catching features
• Basic bearings to check direction
• Understanding rights of way

You will learn by tutor explanation and demonstration, group discussion, and practical experience
out and about.
You will be able to see how well you are doing by practicing the techniques and getting feedback from the tutor.

Are there specific requirements for joining?
We will be staying on footpaths in the valley rather than venturing on to the fells but a reasonable degree of fitness will be required.
