The Management, Finance, Hospitality and Tourism Pre-Masters programme provides the subject knowledge, language proficiency and study skills you need to progress to postgraduate study in a related field at the University of Surrey.

During the programme you will study a core unit of general subject skills and subject-specific units, which are carefully designed for your academic development.

If you need to improve your English language to reach the required level, you can take our English for Pre-Masters programme over one or two semesters before starting your Pre-Masters programme.

One-semester course modules

Academic English skillsThe Academic English Skills module aims to give you the right knowledge in language and related academic skills, enabling you to achieve your academic potential at University.

These include:
  • Academic writing
  • Effective and extensive reading strategies
  • Effective participation in seminars
  • Delivering presentations
  • Listening to and recording information from lectures
You will also develop your vocabulary and accuracy in written and spoken English, giving you the ability to use language effectively and appropriately with clarity and confidence in an academic context.

Career Ahead

This module provides the opportunity for students to identify and develop skills for success, both in their studies and future career. The focus on employability skills reflects the fact that Pre-Masters students are closer to the job market than other students.

Students will learn to evaluate their own level of personal development, recognise and analyse the importance of behavioural competencies required for success in their own chosen field.

They will also reflect on the application of a range of effective interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills through independent learning and group work

Contemporary issues in business management

The aim of this module is to provide students with the background knowledge and skills to enhance their commercial awareness and business communication skills through studying contemporary business issues and their impact on business practices and performance

Students will be provided the opportunity to understand key business and management concepts, alongside the ability to develop their research skills in a business and management context.

The module provides a clear and comprehensive understanding of the latest thinking, behavioural practices and management functions within contemporary businesses and their impact on performance.

Research skills for Masters

This module is designed to promote the integration of the knowledge and skills you have acquired during your programme, leading to an assessment where you will demonstrate what you have learned.

Students will deepen their knowledge and develop their ability to critically analyse theories related to their chosen field, through exploration of secondary resources. The module also prepares students to submit a literature review, including an executive summary, within the framework of a Masters degree.

This will help foster a process of critical reflection and active self-management in the learning and research cycles during your Pre-Masters Programme.

Finance & investment management (elective module)

The main aim of the module is to introduce students to concepts relating to financing and investment decision making. This will equip them with a broad knowledge of managerial decision-making.

The module also introduces students to theories relating to financing and investment decision-making, and how these theories might differ from what can happen in practice. Students will develop an understanding of financial management and investment models in the decision-making processes of financial managers.

This module provides students with the knowledge and skills to apply financial tools to construct, rebalance and evaluate a portfolio of financial assets. Students will be exposed to a wide range of techniques in rebalancing, comparing and analysing financial assets and applying learned techniques in their chosen specialism.

The international visitor economy (travel, tourism, hospitality and events) (elective module)

This module aims to provide students with an understanding of the visitor economy from an international perspective, alongside the principles and practices of sustainability within industry, focussing on consumer theory and business behaviour.

By developing their knowledge and understanding, students will be able to develop a framework for recognising sustainable tourism, hospitality and events operations in the context of an international market. There will be a focus on mission, ethics, strategic direction and competitive advantage.

Throughout the module, key challenges facing the industry will be explored so that students gain a clear understanding of the current and possible future issues relating to the International Visitor Economy.

Additional modules for two semester programme

EntrepreneurshipThis module is designed to provide students with an introduction to entrepreneurship and to the processes involved in starting a business. Students will gain an understanding of the nature and characteristics of entrepreneurs and identify their own potential entrepreneurial capabilities, exploring a business start-up and preparing a business plan.

The module will also focus on employability, offering students the opportunity to work in or lead a team. They will develop self-management, business awareness, creativity, listening, written communication, prioritising, problem-solving, planning, influencing, negotiation, self-reflection, application of IT and numeracy and research skills. It will also develop students' awareness and engagement with their own personal development as they reflect on the skills gained.

Management and Leadership

The aim of this module is to introduce students the importance of interpersonal skills, managing people, teams and groups in organisations to achieve superior performance. Students will gain an insight into the current thinking on leadership from an organisational perspective. They will examine the links between management and leadership, particularly the skills a leader needs to support organisational direction. The module will help students understand the impact of management and leadership styles on strategic decisions in differing situations, through examining the competencies and styles of successful leaders.

Applying management and leadership theories and models to specific situations will enable students to assess their impact on organisational strategy. The module will draw on a selection of established principles, including the influence of emotional intelligence on leadership effectiveness. This will enable students to assess how organisations can plan to meet current and future leadership requirements. Students will develop analytical and long-term planning skills through the use of case studies and research.

The module will enable students to research a range of management and leadership development methods evaluating theirs in meeting the skills requirements for effective leadership
