First year includes foundation Biology and Chemistry courses. Optional courses cover a wide range of complementary subjects, including Tools for Science, Land Management, Environmental Science, Scientific Skills and Computing Science.

Second Year
Second year courses progress studies in Ocean Biology, Vertebrate Zoology, Invertebrate Life and a Marine Field Course. Courses in Genes and Evolution, Community Ecology and Microbiology are recommended, but alternative courses can be selected from a wide range of subjects.

Third year courses are in Marine Biology, Aquatic Biology, Conservation and Exploitation, Environmental Physiology, Animal Population Ecology, Animal Evolution and Biodiversity and Experimental Design, Analysis and Presentation. Students also choose from a range of courses covering Animal Behaviour, Plant/Animal Interactions, Diseases and their Vectors and many other specialist topics.

Fourth Year (Honours)
Students carry out an independent research project in Marine Biology, often in collaboration with an external organisation or occasionally as part of a deep sea research cruise. Students also undertake an extended essay. There is a choice of advanced courses in Marine and Fisheries Biology, Abyssal and Hadal Environments, Marine Benthic Ecology and Marine Biology in Depth. The breadth of options is extended by courses in Biological Timing, Bioethics, Wildlife Conservation and Management, Community Ecology, Advanced Immunology and Advances in Vector Biology. Students improve their transferable skills through presentations, groupwork and team building activities.

Teaching & Assessment

Teaching methods include lectures, laboratory practicals, fieldwork, field courses, seminars, and tutorials. Most courses are marked by continuous assessment and a written examination.

Additional information

Comments: There will be opportunities for expeditions, voluntary work overseas and ‘year-out’ placements. North American exchanges are also possible, normally in the second year of a four year programme. Similarly, it is possible to study for part of the degree in another European university under the Socrates programme.
Career opportunities: Graduates continue their education by reading for higher degrees or by taking a postgraduate Diploma to enter biology or general science teaching. Marine Biology graduates find full-time employment in a wide range of careers. Employers include fisheries laboratories, government and non-government conservation organisations, local government, environmental protection agencies, and research bodies. There is a growing demand for marine specialists and a variety of companies have arisen as marine legislation and regulations increasingly require rigorous environmental audit and monitoring.
