UCB has designed this course with leading industry experts to give you the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to succeed in this challenging business environment.
You will undertake practical marketing activities as diverse as creative communication design and public relations, marketing research for local businesses, marketing plans, pitching ideas and innovations to events companies and marketing for a local charity.
Throughout the course there are opportunities to customise your studies through a range of specialist optional modules, gain valuable work experience in events and marketing, take part in an industry-based competition and gain an industry recognised marketing qualification from the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Year 1
Events Principles and Practice
With such an extensive variety of events organised each year, planning and execution is challenging. In this module you will gain a sound knowledge of the nature, significance, organisation and development of the events industry in contemporary society. You will gain knowledge of the factors affecting the events industry from a national and international perspective.
External Business Challenges
You will learn about the wide range of external influences that affect business operations and decisions in today's increasingly globalised world. You will develop an awareness of the diverse range of external influences such as political, economic, social, legal forces which managers face in the business environment, locally, nationally and internationally.
Marketing Dynamics
You will be exposed to the principles and concepts of marketing. Assuming the role of a Marketing Manager, you will learn how to make and justify a range of marketing decisions as well as learn about market segmentation and marketing tactics within differing types of organisations. You will be able to appreciate the importance of customer orientation and of satisfying customer needs successfully in an increasingly competitive environment.
People and Organisations
To help you with the fundamentals of understanding the management of people, you will be looking at the internal structure of large and small organisations. This module also examines current business theory, with a focus on the practice of managing people within a variety of organisations.
Planning for Professional Development
Do you know what your future career will be, or what you would like it to be? In this module, you will be encouraged to consider the range of career paths available to you within the business and marketing sectors. You will undertake an audit of your current skills and attributes and then map them to those that are required within your possible career paths.
Principles of Communication
You will learn about marketing and communication principles and develop an awareness and understanding of various communication techniques. You will gain practical experience through the production of a piece of communication and design.
Principles of Finance
You will develop an understanding and awareness of the fundamental principles of finance including cash budgets, profit and loss accounts, balance sheets and break-even analysis. You will learn how managers can use financial information to greatly enhance the decision making process.
Year 2
Consumer Insights
Why do consumers behave in the way they do? As a marketer, you need to understand the underlying factors influencing consumer decisions. You will understand and appreciate consumer behaviour and its impact on the marketing decisions undertaken by organisations. This module includes a residential trip, enabling you to apply theory to a 'live' setting.
Enhancing Employability
You will be encouraged to identify and apply for opportunities and careers that are available to you. You will identify opportunities for development through training needs analysis which can extend to include recognising the potential to develop your skills through work experience, placement and overseas study.
Events Planning and Operations
Ever wanted to set up or manage your own event? Within a team, you will plan and execute an event to a specific time frame and raise funds for a nominated charity. The overall aim is to enable your group to experience the practical implementation of different methods and theories relevant to event management whilst also developing a positive attitude to risk-taking and entrepreneurship through creative and innovative thinking.
Marketing Intelligence
The importance of marketing research is growing in the increasingly-global competitive marketing environment. You will explore the nature and scope of marketing research, including where and how marketing research fits in with other aspects of marketing management, the characteristics of the research industry and marketing intelligence suppliers.
Psychological Approaches to Communications
How do marketers persuade customers to buy? You will learn about marketing psychology in the context of persuasive communication, developing a deeper level of understanding about the cognitive processes involved when dealing with persuasive communication. This will allow you to analyse these processes and to apply your knowledge in a specific marketing context.
Skills for Enterprise
Thinking of setting up your own business? This module equips you with the knowledge and skills to create, develop and successfully manage a new business start-up, a spin-out company, a marketing campaign or a new product launch. You will combine theoretical understanding with practical skill development and hands-on business decision-making to develop your entrepreneurial techniques.

Professional Placement
Students will undertake Enhancing Employability module in Year 5, prior to undertaking their placement year. By undertaking this module, they will be provided with essential skills and tools to apply and secure their own placement (with support from Hired@UCB) and complete the requisite time in placement.

The voluntary sector is one of the most dynamic sectors worldwide. You will have the opportunity to work on a volunteer project within a private, public or community organisation and see how they market themselves and compete for resources with other voluntary projects. You will be able to reflect on your experiences as well as develop your personal and professional skills within a working environment.
Modern Languages (Upper Intermediate)
If you wish to further develop your language competencies, we offer a higher level tuition in several languages including French, German, Italian or Spanish. Not only will you be studying grammatical structure, but you will be exposed to using languages in complex business situations. Language development can also help to open additional career opportunities.
Applied e-Business and e-Marketing
The internet continues to have a tremendous influence on business, so companies of all sizes are re-thinking their strategies on how to operate efficiently. You will be encouraged to explore the realities and implications of e-commerce from a marketer's perspective. You will be introduced to a wide range of e-commerce issues for marketers, which will prepare you for working within this dynamic environment.
Creative Communications
The skills of effective communication are vital to successful management. This stimulating module is invaluable to a range of business aspects such as product launches, brand promotions, travel and food journalism and exhibition guidance. You will be encouraged to discuss the effectiveness of words and images when communicating intended messages and will enable you to critically appreciate the complexities of the communication process.
Enterprise Start-up Studies
In this module, you will get an insight into the key points for setting up and running a small business enterprise . You will be undertaking research into areas such as demographics and social trends, location analysis and customer target markets. As a result, you will be able to justify a demand for your chosen product or service prior to starting up your own small business.
Operational Sales Management
You will learn the concepts involved in managing sales and salespeople, getting a clear understanding of selling within a marketing organisation, the different types of buyers and how to sell to them. In light of the ever-increasing 'internationalisation' of business, you will also be looking at sales on an international scope.
Business Innovation and the Environment
All organisations need creative thinkers to question current business practices and develop dynamic solutions to 21 st century environmental challenges. You will be examining key global environmental issues affecting new enterprises and the importance of innovative thinking. As a result, you will be developing your own creative designs and solutions in response to the needs of contemporary enterprises.
Year 3
Creative Media and Events
What is trending in the creative and event industry? You will be on the lookout for new and future trends, products or services and acting creatively to ensure you develop the critical success factors needed for professional practice. You will consider the future of events management in social, cultural, political and economic contexts. In teams, you will also liaise and produce work for global event clients.
Digital and Social Media Marketing
Digital marketing channels are revolutionising the manner in which all businesses operate and market their business activities. Everyone is looking for opportunities to enhance and support their core marketing communications objectives in this customer-centric multi-channel environment. You will be learning digital marketing principles, the role of social media and how to apply them to create a successful strategy.
Leadership and Change Management
Change is inevitable in an increasingly competitive global environment. You will develop the skills needed to design, implement and evaluate effective change within organisations operating in a variety of environments as if you were an employee, manager, or external consultant designing strategic change management programs for clients.

Brand Management
The most valuable assets that a company has are the brands that it has invested in and developed over time. You will be given the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to succeed in the management of complex brands and look at how brands are viewed, built, managed and measured to ensure superiority and sustainability.
Modern Languages and Cultural Studies
You will be developing your professional proficiency attributes in another language. Delving into the social and cultural constructs of your chosen language's country, you will be examining contemporary issues whilst maintaining a strong business focus in using languages in a vocational context.
Advertising and Media Management
You will be taken deeper into the management processes relating to advertising, focusing on the skills involved in matching business objectives and brand communication to target markets. You will be given a greater insight into detailed analysis of what makes advertising communications effective.

The role of the not-for-profit sector is becoming increasingly significant on both a national and global scale. You will be analysing the business and marketing principles of the not-for-profit, and how they contribute to running an efficient organisation in a complex and dynamic environment. You will be able to look at business examples from a variety of sectors, including education, social services, charities and voluntary organisations.
Research option
Research Project
You will have the opportunity to engage in an independent research project of your choice. You will have support with preparing your proposal and understanding the competent characteristics of good research. An appointed tutor will help guide you through this important and rewarding process.
Marketing Showcase
This module enables you to demonstrate your capabilities in researching, planning and delivering an industry or community-related project. You will cultivate the desired graduate attributes of professionalism, critical enquiry and problem solving, enterprise, creativity and innovation. You will then exhibit your research findings in an event for peers and industry professionals.

Additional information

Teaching and assessment Teaching is carried out by appropriately qualified and experienced lecturers one day per week and in a typical week you will have up to 13 contact hours of teaching made up as follows: Large group teaching - 5 hours of lectures in lecture rooms Smaller group teaching - 6 hours of teaching in smaller groups discussing topics relevant to the modules. This will also include computer-based activities. Tutorials - 2 hours of tutorials (involving personal, group and academic sessions each week) Individual study You will need to apportion approximately 20 hours per week of your own study time in preparation for lectures and preparing for and completing assessments. UCB Online provides 24 hour access to learning and support material. Assessment Assessment is designed to provide you an opportunity to demonstrate your strengths in a number of ways and a variety of assessment methods are used. There is a strong focus on the vocational nature of this course including live project work and industry-based assignments. An estimated breakdown of the assessment for this course is as follows: Coursework - 68% Practical assessment - 24% Written examinations - 8% Course work could include: building professional portfolios; conducting situation and marketing analyses; and generating management reports and audits. Practical assessment could include: presentations (individual and group) and using creativity and problem-solving skills to generate business solutions. Some modules also have assessments linked to study trips abroad.
