Course programme

What you can achieve from the course The programme is designed not only to give you a thorough understanding of business and management processes, but also to enable you to develop your effectiveness as a practising manager in the wastes industry. In many cases this development will be dramatic. The programme will create many opportunities for you and your organisation to improve performance, by building upon your experience as a manager, developing your skills (creative and analytical), and giving you the broader strategic perspectives needed for senior management. In addition, as part of the programme, participants will visit Westminster where you will be given unprecedented access to UK policy makers. You'll have to put a lot into the programme though. As a postgraduate degree it is demanding both in terms of entry qualifications and the rigour and workload associated with the course. If each Stage is studied over 12 months, you should budget for 10 hours per week to be dedicated to the programme. The UK Waste Industry The UK waste industry has been under going considerable change in recent years - moving from primarily Local Authority controlled to one dominated by major international organisations. Much of these changes have been achieved through mergers and acquisitions. Consequently the industry has now a turnover of approximately £6bn and employs 120,000 people, emphasising the need for professional management qualifications allied to the specific sector needs. This programme provides a unique opportunity for suitably qualified and experienced managers in the waste industry to engage in high level, tailored learning of value to their self development and their organisation/industry wellbeing. Course Content The MBA programme consists of three stages: Stage 1 · Accounting and Finance for Managers · Organisational Strategy · Marketing: Principles and Management · Wastes Management For those students satisfactorily completing only the first year of study a Postgraduate Certificate in Wastes Management is available. Stage 2 · People in Organisations · Management Operations · The Politics of Waste For those students satisfactorily completing only two years of study, a Postgraduate Diploma in Wastes Management is available. Stage 3 · Research Methods for Business · Dissertation Programme Materials Each course member will be provided with the following materials to support their studies: · A text book and a study guide to help with learning, to outline the format of the programme and then act as an ongoing support throughout the programme · A CD ROM for each module which guides students through the topic and which contains a number of self assessment exercises and recommended reading. Audio and video clips are also provided together with useful links to additional resources on the internet. · The recommended text book for each module is provided as part of the programme and this is included within the programme costs. · For some modules, the CD ROM and text books are supported by relevant multimedia items such as videos/DVDs. When this is the case, each student is provided with their own copy. Programme Support In addition to the above, everyone has the opportunity to take part in an induction programme at the start of the course which is intended for participants to learn more about the course and get input on how to study for a postgraduate qualification. Apart from the Politics of Waste module, each module has a voluntary half-day workshop to support learning and to clarify participants' understanding of the assignments and projects. These take place on Saturday mornings to minimise disruption to work commitments. The Politics of Waste module requires attendance at two half-day sessions in Westminster. Distance Learning Management qualifications lead to career progression and better management skills. However, it is sometimes very difficult for busy managers to combine full time employment with attending lectures and tutorials as part of a traditional university part-time or full-time programme. This Distance Learning programme, using internet technology (e-learning) allows managers the flexibility to study at a time, place and pace that suits them.
