You will become equipped with the core knowledge, skills and values required for social work practice. On this programme you will learn about effective approaches to work with children and their families and adults at risk (including older adults, and mental health social work practice). You will study legal, policy and ethical frameworks for social work practice; human development; social work methods of assessment and intervention.
Emphasis is placed from the start of the programme on learning skills for social work practice. You will first undertake a Readiness for Direct Practice module in our state-of-the-art Practice Learning Skills Lab. This is followed by two contrasting placements of 70 days and 100 days. A specialist practice interest module provides you with the opportunity to undertake an in depth study in a chosen area of special interest and can be taken in a national or international setting.

A purpose-built Social Work Skills Lab to learn and practise social work skills.
Involvement from service users and careers in all aspects of the programme.
Close links with key stakeholders and partner agencies mean you have the chance to learn from service users and carers, shadow experienced social workers, and make observation visits; and have excellent practice placements.
International and national focus to develop further awareness and understanding of social work interventions in different cultural and policy environments (and an option in the special interest module to have an international practice learning experience).

Excellent employment prospects. We prepare you for your Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) which you will undertake when you have qualified and start work. Local employers contribute to preparing you for employment when you qualify.
On completing the course you will be eligible to apply to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to register as a social worker. Employment opportunities are available in:

Mental health, disability, learning disabilities, older adults, addictions, and forensic services
Good career development opportunities and post-qualifying training and awards are now an established part of the social work profession.
A degree at 2:1 or above, normally in a social science subject.
Key Skills Level 2 or equivalent (eg GCSE A–C) in English and Mathematics or equivalently validated access course credits.
All applicants must confirm prior to interview that they have the ability to use basic IT facilities, including word processing, internet browsing and use of email.
This course is designed to give suitable graduates a professional qualification in social work. On successful completion, you gain a Master of Social Work (MSW), and are able to apply to join the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)'s register of social workers.
