  • I like to live and study at Loughborough. My only advise would be to think hard before selecting a course here as you are going to spend 3 to 4 years here.

Overview
Our Mathematics with Qualified Teacher Status programme prepares future teachers to engage and motivate school students to be mathematical thinkers and not just learners of items in a mathematics curriculum.
The Mathematics with Qualified Teacher Status programme is practically based, with 24 of the 36 weeks spent in our partner schools. University weeks are organised with half a day on General Professional Studies and two full days on Mathematics Education. Work is set to be done on the remaining days of the week which will feed in to the Mathematics Education sessions.
The PGCE course at Loughborough has been judged on three occasions to be an ‘outstanding’ course by Ofsted and has had excellent reports from External Examiners.
The Mathematics Education Centre is one of the leading research centres for mathematics education in the country and has an outstanding international reputation. Course programme

What you'll study

Our Mathematics with Qualified Teacher Status programme is designed to produce well-qualified subject-specialist teachers for secondary schools, who engage in critical reflective practice to further develop their teaching and enhance pupil learning.

Modules

This programme covers a wide range of topics; to give you a taster we have expanded on some of the core modules affiliated with this programme and the specific assessment methods associated with each module.

Compulsory modules

The Mathematics PGCE course is part of a Masters in Education (Mathematics) with QTS. The Mathematics PGCE involves the following compulsory modules:

General Professional Studies

General Professional Studies

Provides an opportunity to gain a systematic understanding of the wider professional requirements of teachers in secondary schools; develop critical awareness of contemporary whole school issues informed by professional practice; critically appraise policy and research related to the wider professional development of new teachers; and address the requirements of the Teachers' Standards (Department for Education, 2011).

Professional Studies (Mathematics)

Professional Studies (Mathematics)

The aims of this module are to develop the understanding and skills required of a research informed and practically skilled specialist secondary school teacher of mathematics and fulfil the requirements of the Teachers' Standards.

Practical Teaching

Practical Teaching

Your introduction to the teaching skills necessary to qualify as a specialist teacher of mathematics in a secondary school and to develop essential teaching competences.

Successful completion of these modules gains a PGCE. If the first three modules are also passed at Masters level then 90 credits are gained towards a Masters degree. It is optional as to whether students wish to continue to complete their Masters degree. If they do then the following modules complete the Masters degree.

The first of these takes place through an intensive one week course immediately following the completion of the PGCE course. The research project can be completed part-time in the second year of teaching and is a distance education course so that it can be completed wherever someone gains their teaching post.
