Subject category:
Science and Mathematics

What will I study?
In each year you will study two core units (pure maths) and one unit of your chosen applied option (chosen from statistics, mechanics or decision maths). In the second year you can either continue with the same applied option for deeper understanding or change to get a broader experience of applying mathematics.

Duration:
One year for AS Level and a second year to complete the A Level.

Do I need any additional qualifications/ skills?
You will need determination and commitment as maths is a difficult subject with a high workload.

How will I be assessed?
Throughout the course you will be given weekly homework assignments. In addition, there are internal tests which allow you to monitor your progress and give you experience of working in exam conditions. At the end of the course each unit is assessed by a one and a half hour exam. There is no coursework attached to any of these units.

What can I do afterwards?
Maths is widely used by people in a variety of professions. It is difficult to think of areas where maths is not used. Most careers welcome people with advanced maths qualifications. Many of our students go on to study maths at university.

Are there any additional costs involved?
You will need to buy textbooks for core maths and your applied option. A graphical calculator is recommended for this course. Please get in touch with us if you are considering buying a graphical calculator before you arrive.
