Candidates should hold a relevant engineering qualification at Level 3. Ideally you will be employed, but an opportunity to complete the practical aspects through formal work placements or part-time employment is considered. All applications will receive an interview with the course tutor.

This course is ideal for technicians and engineers already employed in the industry seeking to enhance their knowledge and skills, and also update on current advancements in technology.

What will I be learning?

This course provides a specialist work-related programme of study that covers the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required in the mechanical engineering sector and also offers particular specialist emphasis through the choice of specialist units.
Core units include:Business management techniques; analytical methods for engineers; engineering science; mechanical engineering project; mechanical principles.
A further five specialist units can be selected from topics such as engineering design, fluid mechanics, computer aided design, computer aided machining and engineering mathematics.

How will I learn?

You will develop and enhance new skills in a real mechanical machine shop working on precision equipment. Theory lessons are delivered in well equipped classrooms including ITC facilities with specialist learning programmes.
You will be assessed by completing a specific range of assignments for each unit which are marked and graded a pass, merit or distinction. These assignments allow you to demonstrate your developing knowledge and skills. A project assignment is included which can be completed as a group and through workplace experience.

What else might I want to know?

Industry visits and tours are an important part of this programme. This can include involvement in an international industry specific visit.

What can I do afterwards?

Progression from this qualification may well be into or within employment in the mechanical engineering sector. Learners may want to extend the specialism that they followed on the Higher National Certificate programme by completing additional units. Learners may also wish to consider a foundation degree course.
