About this course
Our four-year MEng Mechanical Engineering with a Year Abroad course begins with two years of intensive core study, giving you a thorough understanding of a wide range of engineering disciplines. You have the excellent opportunity to spend a year abroad at a leading partner institution within a Master's level degree. Please note you may have to meet a foreign language requirement in order to complete an exchange (see Entry requirements below). Having built a strong foundation in engineering, your third and...
Home and EU students 2016 entry: £9,000 per year Year Abroad: £1,350 Please note the tuition fee you pay may increase slightly each year in line with inflation and subject to UK government regulations. If you have applied for a Tuition Fee Loan (see below), your loan entitlement will automatically increase to reflect any changes; you will need to reapply for a loan each year at the new fee rate. Course programme
Modules shown are for the current academic year, and are subject to change depending on your year of entry.
All students spend the first two years following the same core programme of studies, which provides the fundamental knowledge and intellectual and practical skills that are required by all mechanical engineers.
In year three you complete the core programme with a literature survey project, and a major group ‘design, make and test’ project.
You also select optional modules from a wide range of both technical and non-technical subjects.
In year four you spend time at a leading partner institution abroad, completing modules and undertaking assessments in the host country.
You will be expected to achieve at least 40% in each academic year, as well as other requirements (see Teaching and Assessment).

In the third year you study a combination of core and optional modules.
Core modulesThe below modules are assessed by examination:
- Machine System Dynamics
- Thermodynamics and Energy
These modules are assessed by coursework:
- Design, Make and Test Project
- Engineering Ethics
- Literature Research Project
You can begin to specialise in a direction that matches your developing interests and career plans by choosing five optional modules in a particular area or, alternatively, over the whole range of mechanical engineering.
Group 1- Computational Continuum Mechanics
- Embedded C for Microcontrollers
- Finite Element Analysis and Applications
- Fluid Mechanics 3
- Fundamentals of Fracture Mechanics
- Introduction to Nuclear Energy
- Mathematics 3
- Statistics
- Stress Analysis 3
- Structure, Properties and Applications of Polymers
- System Design and Optimisation
- Tribology
- Business for Professional Engineers and Scientists
- Design-led Innovation and New Venture Creation
- Manufacturing Technology and Management
- Technology, Business and the Market
Only three Design and Management modules can be counted toward your final degree as a whole.
You can choose one module from Imperial Horizons, allowing you to take non-technical business or humanities subjects such as:
- languages
- history
- philosophy
- management studies
You spend this year studying at a leading university in Australia, Singapore or the USA, or via the Erasmus scheme in France, Germany, Switzerland or the Netherlands.
While abroad, you will undertake a combination of classes and a project – in France this may be undertaken in industry. The grades you achieve during this year will count directly towards your Imperial degree.
In France, Germany and Switzerland, teaching is in the host language so an acceptable proficiency is required – we will provide access to the learning resources you need.
Limited places means competition for some placements is strong so only students who are on track for a 2:1 degree or higher by the time of selection in year three will be eligible.
