Who is this course for?
You should have a serious and committed interest in Media or Graphic Media and be prepared to work hard for a first qualification towards a career in the media and graphics industry. You should be looking forward to using technology and to express your ideas and opinions through your work in video, photography, animation and writing. The course is suitable for you if you want to make media products in video, graphic design and photography as well as writing about the media industry and its effect on society.

What are the entry requirements?
You will require 2 GCE grade D for entry. You may in fact have more than these minimum grades. Ideally one of these D or above grades should be in English. For your interview you should bring along any writing that you have produced for English, Media Studies or History classes at school. Also bring any video, poetry, stories, graphics, drawing or photographic work that you may have done in the past. This is not necessary but if you have produced images and sounds in your private time or at school then do bring them along. Induction is taken very seriously at this college. You will follow a five week induction programme where your suitability for the level and type of course you are hoping to be on will be assessed. Successful completion of the induction period will confirm your place on a course.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.

  • You can read longer pieces of writing and understand the main ideas without help. You can write longer pieces of writing of 100 words or more.

What qualification will I receive?
BTEC 1st Diploma in Media plus Key Skills in Communication and ICT.

Where can it lead?
You could go on to study a BTEC National Diploma in Media to continue with your work in video, graphics, journalism or advertising. After the BTEC National Diploma you will then have a chance to progress to University or Art School for your BA (Hons) degree or HND.

What will I study?
You will be expected to produce your own media products in video, graphics and in photography. You will have to evaluate the products you make and assess the products made by professional media practitioners. You will be encouraged to develop your written skills and communication skills as you analyse your own work. You will be expected to research and debate the effects media has on you and its effect on society. Your Key Skills will also help you to develop your potential in Communication and IT.

How will I be taught?
Your course will consist of you learning through your own experiences. You will be given demonstrations on how to operate technology and technical support when you need it. You will be given information and guidance by lecturers. You will be working on your skills with lecturers and technicians in studios, edit suites, seminar rooms, through lectures, debates, visits and presentations.

How will I be assessed?
You will be continuously assessed and you will be awarded Pass, Merit or Distinction grades for your practical video, advertising and animation work. Your grades will be awarded according to the quality of work produced for each assignment project. Most assignments are practical. Your First Diploma Course qualification is not tested with an exam but is assessed through a portfolio of your practical and written work.

What support is available while I am on the course?
You will have a tutor from the start of the course to help guide you and support you during your work here at the College. You will be given technical support by our technical support team and our lecturers. You will be guided and given support by your lecturers as you complete assignments. The College can offer other kinds of support, access to PC support in Learning Resource Centres, financial assistance, housing support, learning support and disability support.
