The Programme
The course is designed for anyone with an interest in the Media. It is made up of four modules, two taken each year. Assessment is via one written exam and a coursework component in year one, and in the second year there is a research investigation with an associated coursework element. There is also a final exam assessed unit at the end of second year. You can study AS Level Media as a qualification in its own right or continue with A2 Level for a full A Level.
The Programme Content
This subject offers you the opportunity to combine a theoretical understanding of the mass media in society and methods for analysing media texts, with practical skills. The course covers a study of media texts, media audiences and media institutions. In year one focus is on analysing and responding to different audio, audio-visual and print-based media, and discovering how media texts make meaning to an audience. Students also undertake a production at AS. Year two looks at the relationship between media texts, their audiences and the industries which produce and distribute them, where focus may be on the film, TV and magazine industry. At A2 there is also a research investigation with an associated coursework element.
Progression / Careers
You may wish to progress on to a theoretical or part practical Media, Film or Cultural Studies degree or work in the media or related field. Career paths in the media are less well defined than other fields. Personality, luck, determination and persistence are important factors.
