Medical and Pharmacological Sciences BSc (Hons)

This course balances perfectly in depth aspects of both medicine and the pharmaceutical industry, providing clear career information and how to get there. This is along with the opportunity to stay on at the university and gain a masters in pharmacology and drug discovery, as well as plenty of PhD opportunities for those students willing to work for it. All staff are available when they say they will be and only at the other end of an email, I have received an unbelievable level of support with absolutely everything I have done, whether that be personal, interview training, guidance with work I find difficult etc. The course is set 50% each way roughly by coursework and exams, coursework including essays, lab reports and leading on to writing full scientific articles - potentially worthy of publication or conferences. Final year also includes your own lab based project for your thesis, conducting your own research! Teaching is lecture, workshop and lab based, along with an element of independent study which is up to you if you want to achieve those higher grades.The level of lab experience we gain at this university is of an extremely high standard and focuses around making you an attractive and employable graduate.

I am studying Medical Science and Pharmacological Sciences. It is a very interesting course and you can specialise and divert to any branch. Pharmacology is a great course to be in. I'd like to be a clinical research scientist and this idea came from many work placements I have done during summer. Last summer I worked with one of my lecturers and I was able to see her research on anticancer drugs.

About this course
The Medical and Pharmacological Sciences course has a translational scientific ethos designed to provide the skills and knowledge necessary to take a drug from development through to the patient; providing a combined understanding of both the diagnostic techniques utilised in the laboratory and the mechanistic functioning of whole body and cellular systems. The course will give you a sound foundation in several areas of biology that support an understanding of pharmacology.
If you choose this course you will benefit from:
Eligibility for graduate membership of the British Pharmacological Society and the Society of Biology upon graduation;
Teaching links with the local National Health Service (NHS) cardiac rehabilitation team and with staff in hospital diagnostic laboratories. Research has direct alignment with the pharmaceutical industry in collaboration with UK and international scientists and has attracted funding by Heart Research UK and the British Heart Foundation;
Good staff links with a number of pharmaceutical companies including Bristol-Myers Squib, Proctor and Gamble, and AstraZeneca. We also have good collaborative research links with World Precision Instruments;
Experienced teaching staff who bring their professional or research expertise in to their teaching;
An extensive suite of analytical and biological laboratories staffed by experienced technicians. These include using state-of-the-art techniques such as flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, high performance liquid chromatography, confocal microscopy, ex-vivo techniques such as organ bath experiments on isolated tissues, e.g. hearts, blood vessels, gut tissue, and several computer simulated practical experiments;
Hands-on experience of a wide range of techniques such as drug screening, toxicity testing and molecular biology;
Guest speakers in areas such as pharmacogenomics, neuropharmacology, pharmacovigilance and drug transport and drug development.

Course programme
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
The first year lays the foundation for the study of Medical and Pharmacological Sciences. You will develop key study and research skills through topics such as physiology, microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology and pharmacology.
In the second year you will further develop your study skills and research expertise and will begin to specialise in pharmacology and related areas such as physiology, biochemistry, immunology and genetics.
The final year of your course gives you the opportunity to carry out an independent research project in an area of pharmacology as well as in depth study of advanced pharmacology and drug development, cancer biology, chemotherapy and genetics.
Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars, workshops, practical classes and personal tutorials - as well as problem based learning.
An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 25%; coursework, tests, essays 45%; practical or project work 20%; group work etc.5%; presentations, posters etc.5%.
Where possible coursework uses applied tasks that mimic skills needed in jobs, to help ensure you are attractive to future employers. A compulsory Add+vantage module must also be completed, please see the page on the Add+vantage scheme for more details.
In a typical week you will have up to 18 contact hours of teaching and this breaks down as follows:
