Designed by surgeons, for surgeons and endorsed by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh this specialist certificate will enable you to analyse everyday teaching and learning opportunities while proposing new, enhanced approaches to trainee development through extending your knowledge and skills as a surgical trainer.

Course programme

This specialist Certificate is composed of three 20-credit modules:

  1. Learning & Teaching in Medical Education (20 credits)
  2. Principles of Assessment in Medical Education (20 credits)
  3. Medical Education for Surgical Trainers (20 credits)

The first two modules establish core principles of teaching, learning and assessment. The surgical module includes the use of assessment in surgery, practical ways of teaching in the operating theatre, how you can use simulation to enhance training and how to give effective feedback.

Delivered through an online learning environment each module is 12 weeks long and modules start in January, May and September of each year.
